I read an article the other day that scared the crap out of me. The article was entitled, Why Are Our Kids So Miserable? The article cites lack of free play and too-engaged parenting as possible culprits to our kids feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and sometimes depressed.
The reason the article scared me is because it highlights the increase in depression. From various media accounts, it appears that drug use is on the rise, possibly an escape from the feelings of overwhelm, stress, and the like.
I want my daughter to grow up to be "happy." To reiterate my June 25 post, this doesn't mean that I'll do anything to ensure she never gets upset. That's a disservice to her and to others. But, I certainly want her to experience happiness more than negative emotions. I think we all want that for our kids. Hell, we want that for ourselves.
As a life coach, I know how important it is to identify and manage emotions, and further, understand the trigger that initiates them. Kids need our help greatly in this area. I just hope I'm doing a good enough job to support my daughter and her myriad emotions as she matures.
Be open to what comes.
