"What should I do?"
My daughter asks this question all the time...too much, in fact. I'm a parent, not a cruise director.
I've been reading a bit lately about the loss of unscheduled play and the impact it may be having on our kids. I wish kids had more time to play at school, but I realize that's a challenge. With the drive for academic achievement earlier and earlier, free play has been practically eliminated.
I'm all about letting my child be bored. I'm all about her figuring out what to do on her own. I want her to use her imagination. I want her to play card games, board games, "house" with her dolls, hide-and-seek, and more.
I think unscheduled time for kids is invaluable. If you're interested in this topic, please check out some of these articles:
I am by far not a perfect parent. I could be doing my child a disservice by not scheduling every second of her time. But, I am hopeful that my choice to allow and encourage free time will pay off as she matures.
So when my daughter asks me, "What should I do?", my answer will continue to be, "I don't know."
Be open to what comes.
